It's still negative isn't it? While the whole world is loving the idea of going green, the green band wagon has yet to shine any light on the plight of reptiles and amphibians in a changing world. Locally in the town where I live, misinformation is on the rise with self proclaimed experts telling the newspapers the only solution to snakes is to kill them. Poorly secured trash cans are becoming feeding grounds for an out of control raven population which is ever on the rise. The ravens of course are one of the few effective predators of the beloved desert tortoise. If people knew more ravens translates to less tortoise, and if they understood that their trash is a part of the problem, I am sure they would participate in being part of the solution and not the problem. Pond stores, pet stores, and fairs are still selling bull frog tadpoles and the few waterways we have are infested with them, crowding out, out competing and often eating out fast dwindling populations of Arroyo toads, pond turtles, and two striped garter snakes. Development has already put such a huge pressure on these animals existence that the constant addition of more and more prolific invasive species will surely put them over the edge. This current generation has shown a good move towards a "greener" planet, but there is more to the life on this planet than reusable grocery bags and recycled coffee cups. The few of us that have a handle on what is truly happening need to raise a united voice. There is so much more to herpetology than leopard gecko breeding and bearded dragon care. There is so much more that we can be doing to make a difference. There is so little we are currently doing, and little time is left to change that. Action. It's a verb for a reason, we need to get to doing and not just complaining amongst ourselves. I am touring all over the state doing reptile presentations with a perspective that comes from a mind set of preservation and conservation.

Who cares what you are saying to yourself right now.

Here's what is really important...
What are you doing?

Please spend some time and go to work.

Everyone can make a difference, are you?

Myke on Spike with Jesse James

Ok so this is more of a tease than anything. Really it is a combination of several online reptile enthusiast surveys and I saved my favorite 40 questions and put this together... enjoy.

1. What aquatic reptile would you like to own?
If I could own any one aquaic reptile... Horned Sea snakes.
I already own and or breed: rainbow water snakes, puff faced water snakes, chinese water snakes, tentacled snakes, Bush water snake, western mud snakes, eastern swamp snakes, marine wart snake, Javan wart snake, Arafura wart snake.

Javan File Snake. Photo By Myke Clarkson.

2. Own(ed) any venomous reptiles (i.e. hots)?
From rattlesnakes to mole vipers I have had my experience with hots. I really enjoy rear fanged colubrids as well. More and more as we study these "Warms" we are finding many of them are actually hots. So much needs to be learned here. I really enjoy breaking new ground and with hundreds of rear fanged colubrids still unstudied there is a lot of breaking to be done here.

mangrove snake... a rear fanged colubrid Photo By Myke Clarkson.

3. If you've had any big guys, what kind and how big was your biggest snake?
Big guys, well I bred reticulate pythons (tigers and yellow heads), green anacondas, and burmese pythons, but that market is dead so I sold them off, all but one, she's a 17 + foot female reticulate python with a tude. I used to have a 21 foot burmese python on breeding loan, largest burmese I ever kept. Had it for two years for a project, then returned it to its owner after I got rid of the giants.

4. Biggest snake you think you could handle-
As big as they come.

5. Have you or do you plan to breed any kinds of lizards?
I have had hundreds of lizards, not much the lizard guy, but after owning two reptile websites and a pet store you end up with a few. I have kept everything from Sungazers to Satanic Leaf Geckos.

Angle Headed Lizards. Ok Gila wins.

And the winner... Gila Monster. Photo By Myke Clarkson.

7. Which one was or is your favorite pet?
Pet? I don't tend to make pets out of most of them, but probably my black throat monitor since I have to tame it down to make a good school display.

Monitor Mug Shot. In a shell??? Photo By Myke Clarkson.

9. Owned or want any kinds of crocodilians?
To much room and mess. I have worked with them, and do enjoy them, but feel in most cases are best enjoyed in the wild. Not that some people can't have them, but they need so much room, time and attention I think in most cases they either do not get the care they need.

10. Did you have much luck with your very first pet reptile?
Yes, my first pet reptile was an adult garter snake I caught at Silver Wood lake, that lived 8 years That same year I bought my next two herps (reptiles). My second was a Black belly cal king I got from Vince Schiedt at a reptile show that live 17 years and my third was a ball python I bought for $20. The ball python is 18 years old now and still kicking.

11. Newest herp to your collection-
Aru Scrub Python

12. What are you probably getting next?
Female Woma, Female Macklotts, or more acrochords

13. What would be next if money were no issue?
Most high end herps are simply some lame new morph so for me money is rarely the issue, but finding the animal available, now that's the trick. If I could get the state to approve them legally (we are working on it) I would keep Pelamis Platurus next, also known as the Yellow Bellied sea snakes. I have done a lot of research on them and would love some hands on experience.

14. Feeders you go through the most-
Small mice.

15. Attend any or most of your local reptile shows-
I go to show with in 3 hours driving distance.

16. Own any rescued herps?
Yeah my albino burm I keep for educational displays was a rescue... from a stripper. True story, for another time.

17. How often do you go outside looking for herps, i.e. field herping?
When I am not disabled by a venomous snake bite... several times a week.

All Photos Copyright 2008 Mykeclarkson.com
5:30 Am herping. I do not handle them often

19. Take animals outside?
I never take inside animals outside, to much contamination risk in most cases.
I have a quarter acre outdoor display that houses many natives and such, but they never come in as to not cross contaminate the inside collection.

20. An endangered herp you would breed to at least keep them alive in captivity- Most all endangered herps are already in captivity being bred by zoos and such so its almost a mute point. There are many endangered species I would love to work with and I wish the government would allow the public to participate in endangered recovery programs. Alas they do not so there is no hope for this. Komodos, that would be tempting.

21. Reptile tats?
The words "snake" in Chinese on my left wrist.

22. Watching snakes eat....
Its good to keep an eye on them but is not big thrill anymore. It gets old after so many year, except with new species with new ways of killing, that's still fascinating.

23. Would you take in a komodo dragon if some one was going to just give it to you?
They are illegal, hard to hide, hard to feed, and illegal, did I mention illegal. Local authorities know where I live, I would be caught in a matter of days. Besides, did I mention they are illegal. LOL.

24. Currently waiting for eggs or babies?
Not this time of year...

25. Do all your critters have names?
No that's just silly... ok so some do.

28. Your herps are in what room of your house?
My Lab (i.e. the herp room), my garage, my living room, my bathrooms, my roommate's room, the sitting room.

29. Hardest herp to keep in your opinion-
Hatchling Tiger Snakes, Hatchling Lyre snaks, and Cape File Snakes are all hard, but Spotted Leaf Nose Snakes take the cake.

Spotted Leaf Nose Snake. Recomended zoo for herps
San Diego Zoo, LMK's zoo.

33. Ever lose a herp in your home?
All the time, there are always around 10 loose at any given time.

34. Your favorite herp to watch eat is...
Chinese water snakes, they are such fast agile feeders, amazing to watch feed on a bunch of fish because they really freak out. They even get airborne.

35. Favorite snake hybrid-
Not into hybrids. What a waste of two distinct species!!!

36. if you could only keep one type of herp for the rest of your life you would keep-
WHAT!!! That's a terrible question I simply can not answer.

37. Read reptiles magazine?
Yeah been a subscriber since 1996.

38. Breeding your own feeders, is it worth it?
Yeah, just finished my new mouse house for mass breeding, good money maker.

39. Most aggressive herp you keep?
When I was keeping the stiletto snakes, yeah they were snippy!
Though I just got rid of a really aggressive ornate nile monitor.
And shovel nose snakes bite a lot, but most of those are fake bites and
they are so small its kind of cute really.

Shovel nose trying to show me who's boss... at 5 inches long. I got some of my crew together and we spent the afternoon cutting, photographing organs and taking apart Chersydrus granulatus for my upcoming Acrochord presentation. This will provide graphic illustration to accompany my discussion on Acrochord physiology. The two animals used in this project had died from the dreaded "White Spot Syndrome" and we hoped to get some good illustration of how the surface infection leads to infections in vital systems. Mission accomplished. More info and a lengthy blog coming soon. Gore warning, there will be blood... isn't that a movie? That means that more citizens, like Ross, will have to decide what to do after being confronted with unexpected reptile guests.

Firefighters caught the chamber's visitor and released the snake in the Mojave River bottom.

Myke Clarkson, an education specialist with the North American Field Herping Association, said that removing the gopher snake might not have been the best move. Non-venomous snakes compete with rattlesnakes for habitat and prey, so having harmless snakes on your property may help to deter the rattlers, he said.

"If you remove gopher snakes and king snakes, it opens a hole in the ecosystem," he said.

Other deterrents to snakes include clearing debris and weeds that might provide them with shelter, and making sure there is no standing water close to the house, Clarkson said.

About 8,000 people are bitten by poisonous reptiles in the United States each year, he said. Of those, only eight to 12 die from the venom. For people in the Barstow area, the three species of rattlesnakes found locally are the only venomous snakes to worry about, he said.

Dr. Mike Glassey, a medical entomologist who acts as resident snake expert at Fort Irwin, said he has only seen 14 people bitten by rattlesnakes in his 30 years on the base. Of those, none were fatal or involved lasting damage.

Rattlers are fairly rare in Barstow as well, said Elena Rodriguez with Barstow Animal Control. The last rattlesnake call she remembered responding to in the city was two years ago. The caller had used a shovel to put the snake in an ice chest, not a course of action that Rodriguez endorses.

"I wouldn't recommend that you pick it up with a shovel," she said. "He got lucky, because the snake had just eaten."

Although the rattlesnake was slowed down by the process of digesting its prey, by the time Rodriguez arrived, the snake had vomited up its meal and was ready to strike again.

About 98 percent of people bit by rattlesnakes are trying to catch or kill them, Glassey said. Clarkson said that alcohol is another frequent factor in snake bite incidents.

"I'd say about half are idiots, and the other half are hikers and unlucky people that stick their hands under logs and don't look where they put their hands," he said.

In the event of a snake bite, both experts advised against attempting to draw out the venom or using a tourniquet. Glassey also advised against putting ice on the bite, which may cause the venom to remain concentrated in one spot, causing more tissue damage.

"The solution to pollution is dilution," Glassey said. "And as the venom is going through your body, it's being diluted."

The best course of action, Glassey said, is to remain as calm as possible, remove tight-fitting clothes and jewelry, keep the bite below heart level if possible, and call 911 immediately.

To have a snake removed from your property, call Animal Control at the Barstow Humane Society at 252-4800. If Animal Control is unavailable, Rodriguez recommended calling a local law enforcement agency.

Myke Got Tagged.

MYKE GOT TAGGED:

As Seen On Myspace.com, The short Gory version of my Bite story.

Introduction...

A stileto snake in its defensive posture. PHOTO BY DON SCHULTZ
THIS INCIDENT HAS TALLIED UP IN MEDICAL BILLS:
$236,389.52

WARNING AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE ARE GRAPHIC IMAGES, DO NOT SCROLL DOWN IF BLOOD AND GORE BOTHER YOU.

INTRODUCTION For those of you who have not heard through the reptilian grape vine, I got tagged. One of my southern stiletto snakes (Atractaspis bibronii) got me good. southern stiletos are also referred to as bibrons stileto, southern mole viper, southern burrowing asp, southern burrowing adder or if you speak afrikaans sypikslang. There are many species of stiletos all of which share these vague names. Some are deadly others are not, and all are dangerous. There side of mouth swinging fangs make it so they can bite with their mouths shut and tag you no matter how you hold them. They have the longest fang to head size ratio of any snake, and with a side swinging fang, they are one of the most difficult venomous snakes to deal with. Plus they are fast and they are irritable. And yes stilettos are surprisingly 100% California legal, but bad pets. The reason I had them was for milking them. I and a fellow herper sent the venom to a researcher who was doing protein studies on them to analyze the venom in hopes to synthesize it and make an antivenin. Their venom is unique. It contains a hemotoxin called Sarafotoxin, which causes massive swelling in all blood vessels with its primary target in prey items being the carotid artery. Then there is the bibrontoxin, a nuerotoxin that causes your pain receptors to fire with out reason with the intent of further immobilizing the prey item. The two combined make a very unique and un-treatable bite.

4-27-08 I Got Tagged...

1:08pm

Our work was near complete and I was preparing my group for shipping to the researcher when the very last one slipped from my tongs and tagged my left thumb 3 times. My hand rapidly swelled. Pain took about 15 minutes to set in, but it set in hard, fast and furious. Knowing there was no antivenin I turned to the people I knew I could count on. Don Schultz kind support saved my life. He immediately called up Dr. Bryan Fry (one of my life long heroes for his amazing venom an sea snake research) who told Don a hard truth he already knew. If I went to the hospital there would be nothing they could do for me other than simple pain management. Stilleto snakes are also referred to as Mole Vipers but viper treatment is innefective in treating stilettos. My best hope was for a Doctor who was smarter than standard protocol. California has such a doctor, but he would not be back to work until Tuesday. Thankfully I had a friend who had just recovered from a shoulder surgery with 2 full containers of Vicodin, that held me over, barely. The pain was still intense. The dehydration unbearable. I drank 26 Gatorades in the first 48 hours. I chewed through 4 spatulas during the first 36 hours just trying not to grind my teeth away in pain. I still managed to mess up my front teeth, and will need dental work.

4-29-08 Dr.Bush Part 1

9:00am

Dr. Sean Bush from TVs Venom ER arrived. He gave me morphine and looked at my hand. He prescribed Percocet, much better than Vicodin, this helped a lot. Dr. Bush put me on bed rest for up to two months. After the bed rest period he said I might be facing up to 4 more months of re constructive surgery. As it is right now I am typing with one hand since my left hand is too swollen to move. According to many experts including TV's Mark O'Shae, this is possibly one of the most painful if not thee most painful bites in the world. I can see why.

5-02-08 Dr. Bush part 2

3:30pm

Dr. Bush wanted to see us again to follow up. More pain meds, no new answers. He prescribed Augmentin, an antibiotic to prevent infection and sent us on our way.

5-13-08 Pre-op...EKG

8:00am

This was supposed to be the date of my first surgery, but they wanted to run more tests.. Blood tests came back fine, but the EKG came back with an abnormality of sorts. My EKG read as if I was a heart attack survivor. I have had 4 previous EKGs several years ago to check on a pre-existing heart problem and none of those EKGs came back like this. Since the stilettos have a hemotoxin in their venom it looks like I might want to have further tests done here. It could be nothing, but I am going to play it safe since I already have a week heart.

5-15-08 Surgery 1... Amputation.

5:45am
Before my surgery Dr. Rogers looked at my hand and decided to change my consent form to not include amputation. This was such a great relief. I was excited and encouraged to hear about this, seemed like things were looking up.

6:30am
Then they gave me the run down about general anesthesia. I do not recall leaving the pre-op room, getting onto the operating table or receiving any meds including the general anesthesia.

8:45am
The next thing I remembered was a dream like blur of a fit of pain. It is hard for me to tell what happened, I just remember yelling a lot, crying, and it really really hurting. I remember feeling very confused. Operantly they loaded me up on 2.5mg of Dilaudid and Fentanyl.

3:34pm
I am back at home. I do not remember leaving the hospital or the drive home. I guess I left in a wheel chair. Strangely enough when I woke up at 3:30 I was not sleepy or groggy. Most people are sleepy for up to two days after general anesthesia, but I am fairly medicine resistant, so with most drugs, the anesthesia wore off fast.

4:00pm

Then I was told the bad news. Fifteen minutes into my operation there was a surprise and my wife Becca was called into adjust my consent forms. Dr. Rogers said they did not think the top of my thumb had signs of necrotic tissue past the surface. Turns out there was no necrotic tissue past the just liquid. The bone from the top knuckle was black and dead, the joint open and infected. Half my thumb is gone in some trash can and my next 3-5 surgeries might include some weird methods. I will not go into details until we confirm the next steps, I find out on Tuesday.

5-20-08 Dr. Roger's Review

8:45am
Well the visit to Dr. Rogers went as expected. Took about an hour, a painful hour, to unwrap my hand from the ace wrap covering (see picture below). It looks nasty. I didn't have my camera so I had to use my cell phone to snap a fast picture. There is a problem though, I have 1/4" of exposed bone, not good. So we need to cover that up. The long and short of it is (what a bad pun) if I want to keep the stump thats left I have three options. Integra (artificial synthetic skin), an artery attached skin flap, or a hand to leg skin flap. Integra is a bad option for me because it is delicate. It would provide the best touch sensation, but would be very fragile. If you have seen my hands they are always cut up from field work or some feisty monitor. The artery attached skin flap method is still considered extremely experimental with only a 60% success rate and takes 2 months longer than any other method. It involves cutting a chunk of flesh from your fore arm, cutting out the attached artery and with the artery cut out all the way back to your wrist moving that flesh to on top of my thumb. In the end your arm is a bit cut up, they have to skin graft where they cut from, it takes a long time and there is a 40% chance that in the end it doesn't work anyways. So option three is presented... Cut a hole on the inside of my leg, stick my thumb in the hole, stitch my hand to my leg and leave me stuck to my leg for 3 weeks. Then at the end of 3 weeks remove my hand with a glob of flesh around it that grew from my leg as my leg tried to heal. Then they have to go and try to shape this blob into something that looks like a thumb. This is the strongest method, but will not be very touch sensitive. So they then want to experiment grafting Integra under the strong skin to see if that improves the sensitivity while still having durability. Looks like I am in for a wild ride...

3:30pm
So we were suggested to get a second opinion. After a four hour wait and a second painful unwrapping, the Dr. Gupta said the same thing Dr. Rogers had. What a waste,

...Then it dawned on me. My surgery to un-attach my leg is the day I was supposed to speak at IHS. If you read my blog (I think like 4 topics down from this) I was extremely excited about this. Not going and even bigger presenting at IHS is the single biggest blow so far... I am really disappointed.

5-29-08 Stick Your Thumb in Your Groin

9:45am

What was supposed to be a 2 hour operation ballooned into a 5 hour surgery. As a result recovery took a little longer. I was released at10:30pm on 6-02-08 with a new nasty side effect. The operation nicked a nerve leaving my left leg numb with random shooting pains. Walking is hard (walk hard?) but hopefully that will end soon.

6-13-08 Still Waiting...

So for the past 2 and a half weeks my thumb has been sewn to my groin, so uncomfortable. Can't walk right, can barely balance, can only wear pajamas or gym shorts and have my hand in my shorts 24/7. Sleeplessness and boredom, coupled with nerve pains in my leg. Other than a tour of T-Rex HQ and a trip to islands with a friend a week ago I have not gotten out of the house. This waiting game is terrible. A whole month of my life stuck on the couch with my hand sewn to my leg. 6 days to go... Counting down. 6-19-08, my anniversary, and the day I get my left arm back, counting down. just counting down.

6-19-08 The Separation of Thumb And Groin

We arrived to the hospital at the ungodly hour of 5:30 am! Thankfully I got the same nurses as the amputation surgery on 5-15. The reason I say thankfully is because on 6-13 my nurses stunk. It took them a total of 5 tries to get my IV in one of which was in my wrist and hurt like he!!. This time as on 5-15 my IV nurse was Nurse Lynett got it first try every time, what a God send. Nurse Rita was also there, shes been my main nurse and is very kind. My Operating Room nurse was a familiar face too, Jordan, a young but kind nurse. They knocked me out and I came too around 4:00 pm. They did a nerve block so my thumb felt fine, but my groin hurts pretty badly right now. As to not pull stitches I am not allowed out of bed until 6-24, just three days before I leave for my brothers surgery.

Today...
I am back to the grind, one thumb down, but no less eager to work with these animals than before. It's what I do, its my passion, its a part of who I am and what makes me tick. A rough road, but I am still traveling it.

Thanks to all, you know who you are.

The Aftermath To Come...

I and Don Schultz will be publishing the most extensive bite report on this species to date.

PICS

THE FOLLOWING IMAGES ARE GRAPHIC PHOTOS OF MY BITE.
